Nazca Lines Tours

Taking one of our Nazca Lines tours is a superb addition to other visits you can make in Peru and are some of the most unusual sightseeing attractions you will ever see. These huge figures and lines draw thousands of visitors a year to the arid desert south of the capital Lima. They are located on the high plain between the towns of Nazca and Palpa in the form of huge geoglyphs, etched into the desert, and they can only be fully appreciated from the air. Most scholars agree that the lines were created by the Nazca culture which flourished between 400 and 650 AD but the purpose of the lines is highly debated.

The coastal strip south of Lima is not as well known as the more touristic areas of Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca for example but for those with a little more time it is a worthwhile visit. If you have 2 or 3 extra days you can visit several places and attractions on the drive south towards Nazca. In addition to the Nazca Lines themselves there are a number of archeological attractions near Nazca. The town of Ica with its excellent museums, the Huacachina Oasis, the Pisco and wine vineyards and also the nearby Ballestas Islands can all be visited on a custom made tour.

Getting there – Visiting Nazca, Ica and the Ballestas
The Nazca Lines are normally viewed on a short over-flight in a light aircraft from the nearby town of Nazca itself, or from the city of Ica some 140 km or 2 hours drive away. Ica is around 300 km, or 5 hours drive from the capital city, Lima. If you choose to visit on one of our Nazca Lines tours we have a number of options to adapt to your available time and budget.

There are no regular flights from Lima to either Ica or Nazca at this time. However there are sometimes charter flights in small aircraft to the city of Pisco but these cannot be guaranteed.

Some clients may be traveling to Nazca from Arequipa or vice versa, Arequipa is around 10 hours drive from Nazca. There are no flights between the two cities.

Economy Option

This tour option has you travel to Ica and / or Nazca on the first class public bus with fully reclining seats. This is the minimum standard we offer and is very comfortable with reserved seats, bathrooms, hostess service, TV, aircon and a meal en route. This method will mean that you have a transfer from your hotel to the specific bus company station, from where you will travel to your destination where you you will met and transfered to your hotel for check in. Your guide will then arrange your schedule for your sightseeing and onward / return transport.

This is an economical option but obviously traveling takes more time and you do not have much flexibility with timings and activities. We have a range of hotels and even the more economical ones are comfortable, safe and have good facilities.

Intermediate or Luxury option

A more expensive option, which for a small group may work out better value than the option above, is to have a private vehicle, driver and perhaps a guide for the trip down the coast. This option means you will be picked up from your hotel at a time to suit, then be driven to Ica or Nazca, stopping where you would like and generally having a lot more flexibility.

Having a private transfer will mean you can stop along the way and see some different sites that may not be possible on public transport (for example different vineyard visits), but saying that even if traveling on public transport many of the main attractions can still be included by us.
